US space agency NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover successfully landed on the planet on Friday and this was confirmed by Indo-American scientist Dr Swati Mohan, who led the mission.

“Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance is safe on the surface of Mars, ready to start looking for signs of past life, ”operations manager Dr. Mohan said as the mission control room at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena in California burst into joy.

This video, posted by NASA, went viral on social media, with many praising Dr Mohan’s central role and calm demeanor. Meanwhile, Dr. Mohan’s bindi caught the attention of Indians and they felt proud as she comfortably represented his cultural heritage. Internet users were in awe of Dr. Swati’s cheerful looks.

On the bindi, some netizens recalled that they had been physically harassed for wearing one, which means it is a big deal for Dr Mohan to wear it to NASA and even own it.

Many on social media were in awe of Dr Swati’s cultural look, which contrasted completely with his feat. Others praised Dr Mohan for being a woman, while leading the mission.

A few others tweeted that they had become emotional upon seeing a woman in space, which was once considered a male stronghold.

The NASA scientist emigrated from India to the United States with her family when she was only one year old and spent much of her childhood in the northern Virginia-Washington DC area. Dr Mohan is a graduate of Cornell University and completed his Masters and PhD in Aeronautics from MIT.

“I have been persistent for longer than I have been in any school. I have been persevering for longer than my youngest daughter is alive. It has occupied so much of my life for so long, ”said Dr Mohan.
