Discussions were interrupted early Wednesday night according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Both parties have been negotiating for several days, but among the stumbling blocks that prevented the conclusion of an agreement, there is the insistence of the team on the possibility of giving its opinion on hiring Lue's assistant coaches. Wojnarowski reports that the Lakers want Lue hire Jason Kidd as one of his best assistants after an impressive interview for the position of manager. They are favorites to win the Eastern Conference and their defense has been ranked # 1 in the NBA. He had been ranked in the bottom half of the NBA in the last three full seasons of Kidd.
The Lakers were apparently uncomfortable with the staff that Walton had built during his stay in the team, and some control makes sense given the problems that existed before. But the Lakers have shown no ability to choose the best basketball minds to lead their team. If they really believe that Kidd is the ideal solution for this organization right now, something is basically broken in this franchise right now. Still, Jeanie Buss does not seem interested in hiring a president of basketball operations over Rob Pelinka. She makes Kurt Rambis responsible. This organization is falling apart before our eyes.
