Joe Biden listed a long list of issues at his first big rally on Saturday: civil liberties, education, abortion rights, climate change, health care, immigration, competition with China, infrastructure, and so on.
But there was one topic he wanted to focus on first.
"The most important thing we have to do to get all this done is to defeat Donald Trump," said the former vice president at a crowd of about 3,000 in Philadelphia. "As long as Donald Trump is in the White House, none of this will be done."
Even though he criticized the president for a litany of alleged sins, Biden, a native of Pennsylvania, lamented that the policy was too negative.
"Our policy has become so mean, so small, so negative, so partisan and so unproductive," he said.
"Instead of debating our opponents, we demonize them. Instead of looking for solutions, we seek to score political points. "
This kind of policy is "tearing the country apart," he added.
The rally culminated the three-week sendoff of Biden's election campaign, which placed him at the top of the polls, even as the Democrats group expanded to 24 candidates. He presents himself as the candidate who can bring together the warring factions of the country.
"If the American people wants a president to add to our division, let him head with a clenched fist, a closed hand and a hard heart, that he demonizes opponents and vomits hate – they do not need me, they have President Donald Trump, "he said.
"I run to offer our country – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – a different path."
