SHREWSBURY, UNITED KINGDOM (KRON) – A man became blind to the right eye after washing the contact lenses, which caused the burial of a parasite under the lens and in the eye.

Nick Humphreys, 29, has contracted the rare parasitic infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) in the right cornea, according to CTV News.

Humphreys shared his story with the local publication Shropshire Star, where he is a senior reporter.

According to Humphreys, he noticed that his right eye was visibly dry for a week and had become sensitive to light.

He tried over-the-counter eye drops to relieve him, but when that did not work he consulted an ophthalmologist who found an ulcer in his eye.

Once in the hospital, a doctor diagnosed him with an AK – an infection caused by a parasitic insect called Acanthamoeba.

He was prescribed disinfecting eye drops for treatment soon after, but he eventually lost all vision of his right eye when the infection returned.

Humphreys stated that it had received an experimental operation called "cross-linking" of removing the layers from the eye so that it could be exposed to high doses of vitamins and UV rays, which allowed the treatment to be treated. 39; infection.

Humphreys said that he should undergo a complete corneal transplant at the end of the summer, as well as a cataract surgery, in order to regain a vision in the right eye.

Officials said AK is rare but seems to be more common in some parts of the world, including the UK.

A person who wears contact lenses can get the infection because the lenses can transfer the parasite from the contaminated water or soil right into the eyes, and even trap it.

According to the CDC, the majority of AK victims are contact lens wearers.

The main risks of contracting the infection for contact lens wearers include:

  • Shower with contacts
  • Swimming with contacts
  • Washing the contacts with tap water
  • Mishandling of contacts by putting them in the eyes or storing them
  • Leave the lenses too long
