Selena Gomez’s new music video for “De Una Vez,” her first Spanish single in nearly a decade, is a feast for the ears and the eyes.
In it, the 28-year-old pop star walks through a colorful house overflowing with glowing antique lamps, levitating books, and blooming flowers, all while singing about grief and healing.
Her outfit for the video also underscores the message of the lyrics. Gomez wears a pink puff-sleeve Rodarte dress ($ 2,645) covered in daisies, along with matching flowers in her hair – a nod to iconic artist Frida Kahlo, according to Tania Verduzco and Adrian Pérez de Los Pérez, who directed the clip.
“We wanted to have these connections, create this look and play with the amazing flowers like Frida did, but making it modern and cool for now,” Verduzco told Vogue.
“The flowers on the dress, the hair and in the video are all linked to this idea of renewal.”
Gomez added, “I also love the role nature plays in the video and how it represents healing and growth.”
But the centerpiece of the star’s look is the shiny sacred heart she wears pinned to the front of her dress, one of the many Mexican cultural references that Gomez and her collaborators have woven into the visuals.
“We designed the heart – we call it the Milagro in Mexican culture – and its light to be a metaphor for healing throughout history,” Verduzco said on exit.
Gomez said, “We all have pain and scars from various experiences that we go through in life, but it’s really how we heal ourselves. Not only is it about leaving the past behind and forgiving, but more importantly, it’s also about strength, moving forward, and starting your next chapter.
A poignant choice of message for the singer, who has endured her fair share of breakups that have made headlines over the years.
