The Morning After: Peacock reevaluates 17,000 hours of WWE content

The future will involve artificial intelligence, but (in case you weren’t already careful) we need to be very careful with the data we put into these systems. A team led by computer scientists at MIT looked at ten of the most cited datasets used to test machine learning systems and found that about 3.4% of the data was inaccurate or mislabeled.

These are not niche data sets. Some have been cited over 100,000 times in machine learning research. Some of the mistakes are bigger than others, but include mistaking Bruce Springsteen for an orchestra and labeling a baby as a nipple. (You can shake your head while browsing through all the label errors on a website created by the researchers here.)

These errors could have huge ramifications for machine learning systems if left unresolved. These might still be the early days of artificial intelligence, so we might want to check out its homework.

Collaboration Event Horizon Telescope

Yes, this mysterious whirlwind of light is actually the most detailed image of a black hole to date. Researchers at the Event Horizon Telescope have released an updated snapshot of the hole in the galaxy Messier 87 that shows it for the first time in polarized light. Here we can see how the magnetic fields (indicated by the lines you see here) behave on the very edge of the cosmic phenomenon. Expect more information in the future: While the EHT’s global telescope combination is limited, a future version should be able to produce videos of magnetic activity. Read on.

New York State

New York State has launched a digital passport that residents can use to prove they have been vaccinated or recently tested negative for the infection. You can use your phone’s virtual wallet (on Android or iOS) or a printout to flash a QR code from your Excelsior Pass to show you are safe when you want to go to a concert or a stage performance.

The first users will be large rooms. New York’s Madison Square Garden will begin using the Excelsior Pass next week. The passes will also be useful for small family events, such as weddings. State officials stressed that the Excelsior Pass is strictly voluntary for companies and the general public. They added that IBM-powered apps don’t store or track private health data. Read on.

Uber users in central London can request an all-electric vehicle instead of a regular ICE or hybrid car, the Financial Times reported. Called Uber Green, the new service begins today in London’s Zone 1 as part of Uber’s drive to be fully electric in London by 2025. Travel must originate from Zone 1, but destinations are unlimited. As of January 2019, the company set a fee of 15 pence ($ 0.20) per mile to help drivers switch to greener cars. So far, this has raised £ 125million ($ 172million) and Uber has increased the number of electric vehicles in its London fleet from 100 to 1600. Yet that’s only a small percentage. of Uber’s 45,000-strong London fleet. Read on.

Like Disney, NBCU is grappling with a struggling streaming library.

NBCUniversal’s Peacock Removes Racist Scenes From Classic WWE Matches. While it’s unclear exactly how much has been changed so far, the deletions include blackface in the Wrestlemania VI event of the 1990s as well as racist language in Survivor Series 19 of 2005.

Peacock would go through WWE’s full 17,000 hours of gear and alert the wrestling giant of any changes. It will be a long walk for these critics. It highlights the challenge of filling streaming libraries with material that dates back decades. We want the full collection, but that might bring up some unsavory content that is deaf or downright insulting in 2021.

Disney + and HBO Max faced similar issues. The contentious content included Blown away by the wind (deleted then restored with contextualized companion videos) and Southern song, who never did Disney +. Read on.
