Anyone with cold symptoms should get tested for Covid-19, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said.

GP Buddy, an Irish online medical directory for family doctors, found that a sore throat was the symptom most often reported by patients, in a survey of general practitioners he conducted last week.
Marking a change in symptoms previously linked to Covid-19, he found cough to be the second most common symptom, followed by nasal congestion, sinus congestion, and then fever.
Based on responses from 114 general practitioners, the survey found that headaches were identified as the sixth most reported symptom, followed by a runny nose and then muscle pain.
Difficulty breathing was listed as the ninth most observed symptom, followed by changes in taste or smell.
Recent research in the UK has suggested that the Delta variant of Covid-19 may exhibit symptoms similar to a cold, with headaches, sore throats and a runny nose more frequently than before.
Current advice from the Health Service Executive (HSE) remains that the most common symptoms of the virus are fever, new cough, shortness of breath, and loss or change in smell or taste.
The official notice says a headache, sore throat or runny nose can sometimes be a symptom of Covid-19.
The ZOE study in the UK, which tracks symptoms of Covid-19 that people report on an app on their own, found an increase in the virus presenting as a cold in recent months.
Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London, who is leading the research, said they noticed the change in trend around the beginning of May.
Speaking about the change last month, Professor Spector said it appeared Covid-19 ‘acted differently’ and presented itself as a bad cold in younger generations, following the spread of the Delta variant.
“Since the beginning of May, we have been looking at the main symptoms in all users of the app and they are not the same anymore,” he said.
“Symptom number one is headache, followed by a sore throat, runny nose and fever… Number five is cough, it’s rarer,” he said. .
“We don’t even see the loss of smell entering the top ten anymore, this variant seems to work slightly differently,” said Prof Spector.
High temperature
Similar to the HSE, the NHS currently lists the main symptoms of Covid-19 as a high temperature, a new cough, or a change or loss of smell or taste.
In recent weeks, the Delta variant has become the dominant strain of Covid-19 in the Republic, raising concerns within government and among public health officials.
The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) has warned that the country could be on the cusp of a new wave of Covid-19 due to the new variant.
The Delta variant is more transmissible than previous strains, with other research suggesting that people with a single dose of the vaccine may be more susceptible to infection compared to previous mutations.
