Rivalry week has traditionally been a defining moment in the college football season. In the midst of some of the most recognizable and exciting clashes in the sport, we see division titles won, title chances destroyed and coaches losing matches that get them fired.
The year 2020 has to be different in every way possible, however, and Rivalry Week isn’t quite normal. Division races, title shots and licensed coaches are still on the line, but most of the key clashes are not.
Yes, we get an Ever-Vital Iron Bowl and an Ever-Living Egg Bowl, and the Big Game, Battle on the Bayou, War on I-4, Oregon-Oregon State, etc. are still on the dance card. But you could argue that the most important games of the weekend are Notre Dame-North Carolina and Iowa State-Texas. Traditionally, huge conference games are not.
That’s not to say they aren’t huge, though! Let’s talk about some of the biggest storylines I’m on this week.

No.2 Notre Dame at No.19 North Carolina (Friday, 3:30 p.m., ABC / ESPN App)
Despite some unfortunate losses, the UNC has been, on average, as good as advertised; the Tar Heels are 10th in the SP +, and whatever field advantage that actually exists in 2020 gives them a solid chance to get angry on Friday.
