The New York Times entered the NFT game, selling the chance to own “the first item in the nearly 170-year history of The temperature be distributed as NFT ”- and it sells for around $ 560,000. While Paper of Record isn’t the first brand (or even the first news organization) to sell one of the digital tokens, it’s certainly one of the most successful.
The auction for the NFT was advertised in a column by Kevin Roose, who acts as both an NFT explainer and a sales pitch for why someone should buy the item. The author is also able to talk about the process of creating an NFT and putting it up for auction.

Like other branded NFTs, the NOW added a few extras to sweeten the deal. Of course, there is a PNG of the article that the NFT points to, but the buyer will also receive a congratulatory voice memo from the host of The Daily podcast and be featured in a follow-up article on Selling NFT.
As with many branded NFTs, the proceeds from the sale will go to charity (especially NOWNeediest Cases Fund). Which is great because it is a a staggering amount of money: enough to buy two millennia of NOW digital subscriptions. The newspaper has yet to say whether or how it plans to offset the carbon emissions from the sale.
When asked to comment on the sale, Roose simply replied “wow”.
