  • Elon Musk said SpaceX’s next civilian mission will have a better washroom.
  • SpaceX successfully completed its first all-civilian mission, Inspiration4, last week.
  • Musk said on Twitter that there had been “challenges” with the toilet, without giving further details.

Elon Musk said on Twitter that SpaceX plans to upgrade the equipment for its upcoming space tourism flight, including the toilets.

The Inspiration4 crew, made up of four non-astronauts, took off on Wednesday aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. They landed on Earth on Saturday night.

Elon Musk tweeted Monday saying he had met the crew in person in Florida, then answered questions from Twitter users about the company’s plans for the next mission.

In response to a user, Musk noted the next flight would have “improved toilets”, adding that “we had some problems with this flight”.

The billionaire did not specify what those challenges were or how exactly the toilets would be modernized.

Jared Isaacman, one of Inspiration4’s passengers, told Insider in July that Crew Dragon’s toilets are located on the ceiling of the spaceship and feature a glass dome, which means crew members have a view 360 degrees when using the bathroom.

“It’s not a ton of privacy. But you have that kind of privacy curtain running through the top of the spaceship, so you can separate yourself from everyone,” Isaacman said.

Isaacman added that learning to use the toilet aboard the spacecraft is part of the rigorous pre-flight training for civilian astronauts.

Musk too noted the next flight would have a small oven to heat food and WiFi provided by Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet project.

The Inspiration4 mission crew had a cold pizza on their three-day flight. While in space, they chatted with Musk and actor Tom Cruise.
