New Jersey health officials on Wednesday reported 3,950 more confirmed cases of coronavirus and 107 more deaths, with hospitalizations falling to the lowest number since late November.
The state’s seven-day average for new confirmed positive tests for COVID-19 is 4,325, down 9% from last week, but up 4% from a month ago .
The statewide vaccination total rose to 642,603 doses administered on Wednesday as the state learned from federal officials that additional vaccine doses would be scheduled in the next three weeks.
“Make no mistake, however, that we – like all other states – need significantly increased vaccine production and delivery,” Gov. Phil Murphy said as he announced the latest figures at a briefing. in Trenton. “We just need the doses to make our program work as it was specially designed to work.”
New Jersey’s 71 hospitals reported 3,190 patients as of Tuesday night, down 61 from the previous day and the lowest number of patients since November 30. It’s also an 18% drop from a recent high on December 22.
The pandemic has killed at least 21,220 people in the state since the first death from COVID-19 in March, including 19,091 confirmed deaths and 2,129 deaths considered probable from the virus. Probable deaths were revised upwards to eight deaths on Wednesday. New Jersey reported 2,109 deaths in January, the epidemic’s deadliest month since May.
New Jersey has now reported 606,492 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the nearly 11 months since its first positive test on March 4. Another 70,045 cases of antibody tests have been reported, although these are considered probable and may overlap with confirmed tests.
The positivity rate for tests performed on Saturday, the most recent day available, was 12.62% based on 25,509 tests.
The transmission rate is 0.91, up from 0.92 a day earlier. Any number less than 1 indicates that the epidemic is slowing down.

VACCINATIONS
According to the state scorecard, 642,613 doses of the vaccine have been administered in New Jersey so far. Of that number, 550,526 was the first of two doses people will receive.
That’s over a million doses the state has received from the federal government, according to a running tally from the federal Centers for Disease Control.
The state’s six immunization mega-sites have now opened with around 200 more sites statewide.
New Jersey has been criticized for having a slower deployment than dozens of other states, according to CDC data.
Murphy said on Wednesday that the state can now expect about 130,000 doses from the federal government over the next three weeks, up from 100,000, but demand still far exceeds state supply.
“We still have a big imbalance between supply and demand. We’re still going to be going for the next few weeks, ”Murphy said in an interview with CNN.

HOSPITALIZATIONS
There were 3,190 hospital patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 at 71 New Jersey hospitals as of Tuesday night. That’s 61 less than the day before.
This included 578 people in critical or intensive care, including 406 in ventilators.
According to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard, 416 COVID-19 patients were also discharged on Monday.
Murphy said any hospitalization of more than 5,000 patients would likely trigger new rounds of restrictions. But the number of people hospitalized has mostly declined slowly in recent days after reaching a more than seven-month high of 3,873 people on December 22.
SCHOOL CASE
At least 629 students and staff from 131 New Jersey school districts have contracted COVID-19 during outbreaks at school, according to the latest update from state health officials.
This is an increase of 10 districts from the previous weekly report. There are now confirmed school-based outbreaks in all 21 counties, although the state does not identify individual school districts.
These figures do not include students or staff suspected of having been infected outside of school or cases that cannot be confirmed as epidemics at school. Although the numbers continue to rise every week, Murphy said the school epidemic statistics remained below what state officials expected when schools reopened for in-person classes.
New Jersey defines school epidemics as cases where contact tracers determined that two or more students or school staff had caught or transmitted COVID-19 in class or during school activities at school.
BREAKDOWN BY AGE
Broken down by age, 30-49 year olds represent the highest percentage of New Jersey residents who have contracted the virus (31.2%), followed by 50-64 year olds (23.7%), 18-29 (19 , 3%), 65 -79 (11.1%), 5-17 (7.5%), 80 years and over (5.4%) and 0-4 (1.6%).
On average, the virus has been deadlier for older residents, particularly those with pre-existing conditions. Almost half of the deaths from COVID-19 in the state were among residents aged 80 and over (47%), followed by those aged 65 to 79 (33%), aged 50 to 64 (15 , 6%), 30 to 49 years (4%), 18 to 29 years. (0.4%), 5-17 (0%) and 0-4 (0%).
At least 7,713 COVID-19 deaths in the state have occurred among residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. That number has grown at a faster rate again in recent months, with deaths in nursing homes across the state nearly tripling in December.
There are currently active outbreaks in 435 facilities, resulting in 7,338 active cases among residents and 7,929 among staff.
WORLDWIDE FIGURES
As of Wednesday morning, there were more than 100 million positive COVID-19 tests across the world, according to an ongoing count from Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.16 million people have died from complications from the coronavirus.
The United States has reported the most cases, at more than 25.4 million, and the most deaths, at more than 425,200.
