New Jersey health officials on Tuesday reported 3,164 more confirmed cases of coronavirus and 92 more deaths, with the latest vaccination update showing more than 240,000 residents have received both vaccines and are fully vaccinated.
The seven-day average for new confirmed positive tests is now 3,050, down 22% from a week ago and 39% from a month ago. The new confirmed cases reported on Tuesday include a catch-up from the day before, when 2,218 positive tests were reported, Gov. Phil Murphy said.
“Today’s case counts include some records not included in yesterday’s counts due to an error processing electronic lab reports,” Murphy said.
New Jersey has now lost 22,103 residents in the 11-month epidemic – 19,916 confirmed deaths and 2,187 considered probable. The state reported 572 confirmed deaths in the first nine days of February. The death toll for January was 2,377 confirmed deaths, the highest in a month since May.
The total number of confirmed cases is now 650,263 out of more than 9.6 million PCR tests. There were also 78,041 positive antigen tests, which the state has recently begun to report publicly. These cases are considered probable and health officials have warned that positive antigen tests could overlap with confirmed PCR tests as they are sometimes administered in tandem.
The transmission rate reported on Tuesday was 0.83, down from 0.85 on Monday and 0.87 a day earlier. This is the lowest transmission rate since the end of August, and any number below 1 indicates the epidemic is slowing.
The latest figures come a day after health officials said the number of new cases of the highly contagious variant of the virus that was first discovered in the UK continued to rise in New Jersey.
There have been a total of at least 31 cases in 11 identified counties in New Jersey so far, Department of Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said on Monday. The first two cases of the variant in New Jersey were identified last month.
But with the second wave of the outbreak continuing to subside, Murphy said on Monday that the overall numbers “point in the right direction” and hinted that he may further lift restrictions put in place to stop the spread. The number of new cases has fallen dramatically over the past several weeks, as has the number of people seeking treatment at the state’s 71 hospitals.
The governor did not disclose what action he would take and he also warned that new variants of the virus that spread more easily could turn the tide.
But he has always stressed that preventing hospitals from being hit by surge capacity has been one of the main reasons for the unprecedented restrictions put in place almost a year ago. Hospitalizations are steadily declining after reaching a second peak in mid-December.
The state peaked at more than 8,000 hospitalizations in April.

HOSPITALIZATIONS
There were 2,827 patients hospitalized with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 at 71 New Jersey hospitals as of Monday evening, four fewer than the night before.
This included 544 in critical or intensive care (the same as the day before), including 360 in ventilators (16 fewer than the day before).
According to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard, 166 COVID-19 patients were also discharged on Monday.
SCHOOL CASE
New Jersey officials have reported six new outbreaks of the virus at school, bringing the total to 137 outbreaks and 655 related cases among students, teachers and school staff, according to the latest figures.
Outbreaks – defined as cases in which people have been confirmed to have caught or transmitted the virus in class or during academic activities – have been reported in all 21 counties, according to the COVID-19 dashboard of the State.
These figures do not include students or staff suspected of having been infected outside of school or cases that cannot be confirmed as epidemics at school. Although the numbers continue to rise every week, Murphy said school epidemic statistics remained lower than state officials expected when schools reopened for in-person classes.
New Jersey defines school outbreaks as cases where contact tracers have determined that two or more students or school staff had caught or transmitted COVID-19 in class or during academic activities at school.
There are an estimated 1.4 million students and teachers statewide, although teaching methods amid the outbreak have varied, some are in person, some are hybrid, and others are all distant.
BREAKDOWN BY AGE
Broken down by age, the 30-49 year olds represent the largest percentage of New Jersey residents who have contracted the virus (31.1%), followed by 50-64 year olds (23.5%), 18-29 (19, 3%), 65 -79 (11.1%), 5-17 (7.9%), 80 years and over (5.3%) and 0-4 (1.6%).
On average, the virus has been deadlier for older residents, particularly those with pre-existing conditions. Almost half of the deaths from COVID-19 in the state were among residents aged 80 and over (47.49%), followed by those aged 65 to 79 (32.56%), from 50 to 64 (15.52%), 30 to 49 (4.05%), 18 to 29 (0.36%), 5-17 (0%) and 0-4 (0.02%) .
At least 7,713 COVID-19 deaths in the state have occurred among residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. That number has grown at a faster rate again in recent months, with deaths in nursing homes across the state nearly tripling in December.
There are currently active outbreaks in 435 facilities, resulting in 7,338 active cases among residents and 7,929 among staff.
WORLDWIDE FIGURES
As of Tuesday morning, there had been more than 106.5 million positive COVID-19 tests worldwide, according to an ongoing count from Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.32 million people have died from complications from the coronavirus.
The United States has reported the most cases, at more than 27 million, and the most deaths, at more than 465,000.
