Feb. 26 (Reuters) – Republican North Carolina's Mark Harris said on Tuesday that he would not stand in the US House of Representatives after holding a new election for reasons for corruption in the 2018 vote.

In an email, Harris invoked health problems to justify his refusal to run for office. In the November 6 election, he had led Democrat Dan McCready by 905 votes, but state officials refused to certify him victor because of allegations of irregularities in the vote.

The bipartisan electoral committee of North Carolina unanimously ordered a new vote last week in the 9th congressional district after hearing evidence that a Harris campaign agent had orchestrated a fraudulent scheme.

This decision came after Harris, who had spent months trying to defend himself, called for new elections and acknowledged that the public had lost confidence in the results of last year.

"I also owe the citizens of the ninth district a very fit person during the new campaign," Harris said in an e-mail.

No date has yet been set for the new election in the country's last unsettled ballot in 2018. The result will not change the balance of power in the democratically controlled House of Representatives. (Report by Letitia Stein in Tampa, Florida, edited by Jonathan Oatis)
