(Gray News) – A powerful, Earth-directed solar flare could bring the Northern Lights to the heart of America this week.
The Space Weather Prediction Center issued geomagnetic storm warnings for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This means that North America could be in a heavenly spectacle.
The Northern Lights should be visible across the northern tier of the United States in an arc from Washington to Maine, dipping as far south as Nebraska and Iowa in the plains.
The geomagnetic storm is expected to peak from late Wednesday to early Thursday, with the light show. The solar flare was recorded on the surface of the sun on Monday.
The Northern Lights Center of Canada claims that the Northern Lights are “the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere and charged particles released by the sun’s atmosphere.”
The color changes are due to the type of gas particles that collide with particles from the sun caused by a solar storm.
Pale green and pink are the most common colors. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue and purple were also observed.
To see the Northern Lights, you will need a good view of the northern horizon.
You will see better if you get away from the city’s light pollution. That way, it won’t overshadow the subtle sparkles.
