The Pixel 4a ‘Barely Blue’ has a soft satin finish

We knew it existed at one point, but it never got started. This month, however, Google unexpectedly released its truly excellent Pixel 4a in “Barely Blue”. Also unexpected? How this phone feels in your hand.

My colleague Abner Li has way more to say about this version, but wanted to take a few minutes to talk specifically about how this phone feels in your hand. It is simply delicious.

Like the Pixel 4a “Just Black”, this “Barely Blue” variant is completely made of plastic. It’s a compact and simple device, but this new color is also totally different. The regular Pixel 4a is inexpensive, slightly rough in the hand. This is something totally expected for a $ 349 smartphone and totally acceptable too, given that most people use a case anyway.

The Barely Blue Pixel 4a, on the other hand, feels drastically different. The finish on the plastic has a fine texture that is soft, almost like satin. The best comparison I can make is the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, devices that had etched glass on the back that was incredibly smooth. Unlike the classic Pixel 4a, this limited-edition variant really doesn’t look like the same device.

Even in contrast to the Pixel 5 “Sorta Sage,” this finish feels better overall. I think I prefer the color of 5, but the finish of blue 4a is so much better. Somehow, Google has figured out how to make their phone less premium more premium.

Google has had quite a few colors “out there” for its Pixel phones, and the latter ranks pretty high on the list, especially with the ironically pale versions. The blue tint of this phone rightly stands out against the ‘Purple-ish’ Pixel 3a, even though this version has a significantly better name. What also helps put this version on top is the orange power button which contrasts perfectly with the blue.

Is that a reason to rush out and buy this phone? If you already have a Pixel 4a, I don’t think it’s worth trying to change. However, if you can’t wait to get your hands on this device, it’s definitely worth participating in the Limited Edition before it runs out.

The Barely Blue Pixel 4a is still available on the Google Store at this point, but it could disappear at any time. If you want to get it, act fast!
