The U.S. women’s soccer team announced on Friday that they will wear Black Lives Matter-themed warm-ups ahead of their game against the Netherlands in the two teams’ 2019 World Cup final rematch.
The team said in a video posted to social media that the move was “not political” and instead was trying to shed light on “human rights”.

Crystal Dunn also released a statement specifically explaining the team’s cause.
“We love our country and it is a real honor to represent America. It is also our duty to demand that the freedoms and freedoms on which our country was founded extend to everyone, ”the statement read.
“Today we wear Black Lives Matter to assert human decency. We protest racial injustice and police brutality against black people. We protest against racist infrastructure that does not provide equal opportunities for Blacks and Maroons to achieve their dreams, including playing for this team.

“As players on the United States Women’s National Team, we work collectively for a society where American ideas are respected and black lives are no longer systematically targeted.
“Black Lives Matter.”
It is the first game of the American women’s team in more than 200 days. The coronavirus pandemic has suspended much of their international calendar.
The statement by the U.S. Women’s National Team comes weeks after the men’s team also had social justice statements over their warm-ups.

The US Women’s Football Team and the US Football Federation had disagreed with player protests in the past. The federation issued a rule that players must represent the national anthem after Megan Rapinoe became the first athlete outside of football to protest during the anthem in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.
