The Taycan is another facet of the future, and it is in a different class from that of any Tesla.

The Model S is a family sedan with a load capacity twice that of the Taycan <15 cubic feet. Its rear seat is more spacious. Tesla offers Autopilot – state-of-the-art track maintenance technology – which is extremely convenient for long journeys. The P100D is slightly faster, but is it important? Any S model, like any Taycan, will accelerate faster than most internal combustion cars ever built since the dawn of the automobile era. (For your information: Tesla's good spot is 100D Believe me.)

In comparison, the Taycan is the first true electric sports car, built to be used as such and built to last. The fact that it has two extra doors and a usable rear seat is simply a bonus, as does the fact that the four seats are more comfortable than anything found in a Tesla. This is the opposite of mobility devices like the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt. It's completely emotional. Like obscenity, you know it when you see it. The specifications are almost irrelevant. It is designed to be trained. That the Taycan comes from Porsche is perfectly logical.

Newsflash: The Taycan is for people who want to drive and continue to do so. That's why Porsche exists as a company. If you do not understand this, no Porsche has ever been made for you, and the company might just as well not exist.

But it exists – and continues to grow – because it meets deep human needs that no company can ever solve. The need for change. To be different. Own the future. These needs are solved when people save to go from a Honda Accord to a Model Tesla 3. These needs are solved when five of my friends say that they would never buy a Tesla, but that 39, they trade their Porsche 911 against Taycan.

The questions remain. When will Porsche launch the cheaper model with greater autonomy? Porsche mentioned Live Updates (OTA) at a previous workshop, but did not mention it during the unveiling. Which features will be scalable? Will they update / unlock more battery life with current batteries? What will Porsche Lane Hold be capable of? Does Innodrive 2 look like Tesla Autopilot? Porsche talked a lot about C.A.S.E (connectivity, autonomy, sharing, electrification) during the preparatory evening. What is the driver assistance path for the Taycan?

As the owner of Tesla, I am delighted that Porsche has finally launched an alternative, beautiful, emotional electric vehicle that is sufficiently different from Tesla that the electric vehicle sector can grow rather than cannibalize. Porsche should be very proud. Many other manufacturers have had the time and money to deliver an emotional electric vehicle. They failed and Tesla ran away with the area for years.

These days are over. Taycan is what happens when companies let their best concepts live. I would have one in my heart, but I still have two years for a model 3 that I adore, and I just have a baby, which means that no matter what i'm I have to do, my needs must come first. Maybe these needs will be met by this Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.
