The Poway Americana Festival returns Sunday

The Poway Americana Festival returns on Sunday after taking a hiatus last year due to the pandemic.

The street fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Midland Road between Poway Road and Hilleary Place. Free entry.

It is organized by the Poway Chamber of Commerce. President Mike Leland said the chamber has held an annual street fair for many years and renamed it the “Americana Festival” in 2019.

Due to the pandemic, the outdoor festival has been moved from spring to summer and Leland said there will be hand washing and hand sanitizing stations throughout the event which is expected to attract several thousand participants.

“Go out and have a good time,” Leland said, mentioning that there will be plenty of vendors, activities, performers and refreshment options. The latter includes several food stalls and a beer garden.

“The Beer Garden is a collaboration between AleSmith, The Hop Stop, Barrel Riot Winery and the Chamber,” Leland said, adding that select beer and wine selections will be offered for purchase.

Live entertainment will be presented on two stages. On the main stage between the beer garden and the Poway Community Heroes exhibit near Poway Road, the line-up begins with Lainie Carter singing the national anthem at 9 a.m. The Garners, a jazz / folk group, will perform from 11 am to 11:45 am, followed by a dance demonstration by the Fred Astaire Dance Studio from 11:45 am to noon.

The Pendu group will debut from 12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Its four members – singer Elle Walton, lead guitarist Ryan Bond, bassist Johnny Levine and drummer Jameson Powell-Espiritu – reunited at the School of Rock Scripps Ranch. Walton and Bond are Juniors from Poway High, Levine is a Senior from Westview High and Powell-Espiritu is a sophomore from Mt. Carmel High. The band play classic rock covers as well as a few original songs written by Walton, his father, Ray Walton, said.

“They are all accomplished musicians with many years of experience between them,” he added.

Also on the main stage, Hannah Roby with Mark Huls from 1 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., blues and R&B group Lady Dottie & the Diamonds from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and singer-songwriter Dave Howard from 2:30 p.m. at 2:45 p.m.

The community stage will be located adjacent to the entertainment area which will offer entertainment such as a slide, obstacle course and bungee near Hilleary Place. The Poway Cheer varsity and junior teams will perform at 10:30 a.m., followed by an Impact martial arts demonstration from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Poway Martial Arts / Poway Kenpo will take the stage from noon to 12:30 p.m., followed by by North County Gymnastics and the Gyminny Kids Circus Demonstration Team at 1 p.m. There will be a dance demonstration by the Fred Astaire Dance Studio from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Additional entertainment will be provided on the community stage throughout the show. ‘afternoon.

As for other offerings, they include over 160 local vendors and artisans, the Madame Mechanic Classic Car Show hosted by Poway Transmissions (this will be in the parking lot near Poway Dental) and a Poway Community Heroes area. The latter will feature local agencies such as the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Poway Fire Department, with their vehicles on display.
