MIAMI – Amed Rosario was sent to his room without dinner Sunday.
One day after spending time on the bases – he reached the first rank only on a pop-up which fell between the field teams, whereas he should have replaced it by a second – Rosario was absent from the starting lineup in the Mets 6-2 win over the Marlins.
The shortstop finally made it into seventh place as part of a two-way trade that eliminated Adeiny Hechavarria.
Although director Mickey Callaway initially told reporters that Rosario was on the bench on a scheduled day off, he later told SNY broadcasters that the shortstop was punished.
"I think some of the things we do internally have to stay with us, but I think Rosie knows some of the reasons he did not play today," Callaway said after the game. "And most of all, I want to see Hech there. I want Hech to be fine, he beats well, all the other things are things that have to be done sometimes. "
At the Mets' last visit to Marlins Park in May, the manager was burned for not disciplining Robinson Cano, who had not missed several plays. Callaway defended Cano during this period and, to a certain extent, took the same approach with Rosario on Sunday.
