BOSTON – The Red Sox filled a pressing need 18 days before the transaction deadline on July 31 to acquire an ideal rights-seeker Andrew Cashner Orioles in exchange for minor league player Noelberth Romero and minor league player Elio Prado on Saturday.

Cashner will appear Sunday at the Red Sox and make his first start Tuesday against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park, said Saturday the president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

Fifth place in the rotation is a weakness for the Red Sox since Nate Eovaldi fell in mid-April due to a right elbow injury.

With recent news that Eovaldi will leave the market on his return, Dombrowski is looking to find a starter to support his first four of Chris Sale, David Price, Eduardo Rodriguez and Rick Porcello.

Cashner, 32, was 9-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 17 starts for the Orioles this season. He has completed at least seven innings in his last two starts and at least six innings in each of his last five games, averaging points to 1.41 since the beginning of June. During the season, Cashner kept the left-handed batters at a batting average of .182, a .499 OPS and a single home run.

Romero, 17, made his professional debut this season with the Red Sox2 of the Dominican League, rookie level. The right-handed hitter appeared in 29 games, making 22 starts on third base, five on second base and two on short halt. He averaged .264 (29-in-110) with two home runs, scoring 11 goals against 20 strikeouts.

Prado, 17, also made his professional debut this season with the Red Sox2 DSL, batting .303 (37 vs. 122) with three home runs in 33 games. He made 18 starts in the central field, seven in the right field and six in the left field. The right-handed batter scored 26 points with 26 RBIs, adding nine stolen goals with 20 goals scored and 21 strikeouts.
