Today we celebrate May 1, the day of our tribute to workers around the world, and the beginning of the month of mental health awareness.

At The Root, we take mental health seriously, and we aim to give our readers not only stories they can tell, but also information that they, their family or loved ones can use; More importantly, we are here to move the discussion forward, whether it's around new ways of looking at our mental health, therapeutic advances, and even how mental health is related to social justice.

We know that collective and individual anxiety is at its highest level. There are many reasons: this man in the White House; the constant and negative cycle of news; even social media. Suicide rates are rising for our children and adolescents and many of us are suffering in silence. But there is hope and, as a community, we are in the right place, where some of the stigma of speaking and treatment is slowly diminishing, surely.

This month, we will report on parity, which encourages insurance companies to treat and fund mental health in the same way as physical health; healers in our community who treat mental health in different ways; the mental health of caregivers; mental health and trauma; surviving suicide; and more.

So, be on the lookout for amazing content from our team and others, and we look forward to sharing our work with you.

Forward!

The root team
