On February 12, the California Department of Public Health announced that healthcare providers may soon be vaccinating people between the ages of 16 and 64 who suffer from a number of health conditions. This executive order, which will come into force on March 15, will add several million people to the number of people eligible for vaccines in California.
– Cancer, common with weakened or immunocompromised state
– Chronic kidney disease, stage 4 or higher
– Chronic lung disease, dependent on oxygen
– Down syndrome
– Immunosuppressed state (weakened immune system) by solid organ transplantation
– Pregnancy
– Sickle cell disease
– Heart disease, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies (excluding hypertension)
– Severe obesity (body mass index ≥ 40 kg / m2)
– Type 2 diabetes mellitus with hemoglobin A1c level greater than 7.5%
Beyond these conditions, the CRPD says other people may be eligible for vaccines if, as a result of a developmental impairment or other severe high-risk disability, one or more of the following conditions apply. :
– The individual is at risk of developing a serious, life-threatening illness or dying from a COVID-19 infection
– The acquisition of COVID-19 will limit an individual’s ability to receive continuing care or services vital to their well-being and survival
– Providing adequate and timely COVID care will be particularly difficult due to the person’s disability
While the list includes many serious conditions, several life-threatening conditions are not on the list, even though, as Mercury News points out, they are linked to worse outcomes in COVID-19 patients. Among those that are not included: cystic fibrosis, dementia, hypertension, type 1 diabetes and certain rare genetic diseases.
The state’s announcement expands the groups that have already been approved to be vaccinated against COVID-19. People in phase 1A – healthcare workers and long-term care residents – and in phase 1B – people 65 years of age and over, education and child care workers, emergency services , agriculture and food are already approved.
