A sheriff from Virginia said that a man had attacked two people on the Appalachian Trail with a machete.

The WJHL announced that the Wythe County Sheriff's Office had released a statement Saturday that two hikers reportedly reported that a man with a machete was assaulting people on the Wythe County trail.

A man and a woman were injured. Their names and conditions were not immediately available. The deputies arrested a suspect, whose name was not disclosed.

Sheriff Keith Dunagan previously said that the man had been assaulted early Saturday in Wythe County and the woman in Smyth County.

The Appalachian Trail crosses the western tip of Wythe County. The sheriff's office said the trail was closed Saturday night on Smyth County and that Bland was going to Wythe.
