As the first speaker Sonos has ever built to be used on the outside, the Move has presented new challenges in engineering. The company's goal is to make the move work in virtually every environment and, at first glance, this ambitious goal seems to have been achieved. The Move is rated IP56, which means that it is resistant to dust and water. Although the Move can not be immersed in water (no one would really want to do it), it will survive if it is left out in the rain or snow. It goes without saying that most people will not use the Move in rain or snow, nor in subzero temperatures. But this protection is there so that people can push the limits of what they could do with a consumer electronics gadget and not be left behind: forget about the outdoor speaker after a night spent using it, it will not be spoiled by the elements. It is important to think about all the proposed scenarios with an externally oriented portable speaker and to make sure that it is covered in all reasonable cases. Forgetting a speaker outside in the rain certainly seems plausible. Of course, just as for the battery life, we will have to test the Move ourselves and see how it will behave, but all indications are that Sonos goes well beyond what the average citizen will submit to the speaker.
