CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – The new space capsule of the SpaceX crew is back on Earth, ending its first test flight with an old-fashioned projection.
The Dragon is disarmed from the International Space Station early Friday. Six hours later, the capsule carrying a test dummy plunged into the Atlantic, off the coast of Florida.
This is the first time in 50 years that a capsule designed for astronauts is returning from space by throwing itself into the Atlantic. Apollo 9 landed near the Bahamas on March 13, 1969.
NASA astronauts have been stuck in Russian rockets since the withdrawal of space shuttles eight years ago. NASA is counting on SpaceX and Boeing to start launching astronauts this year.
The Friday morning splash was the last hurdle in SpaceX's six-day test flight.
