Here on Earth, we plan to send the first humans to Mars, but Starfleet seems to have been the first to get there. In the extent of Hellas Planitia, Mars reconnaissance Orbiter photographed a huge formation taking the form of the organization's famous chevron logo.
"Enterprising viewers will discover that these features look visibly like a famous logo," wrote Ross Beyer of the University of Arizona in a statement accompanying the publication of the photo.
Unfortunately, this is not the proof that intrepid explorers head confidently where no man has gone before. "It's only a coincidence," added Beyer.
Chevron shapes are not uncommon at all on Mars, actually. They are usually the result of flux, which has often happened on the red planet in the past.
This chevron is the product of a volcanic eruption at the bottom of an impact basin, a long time ago. Here the sand formed crescent-shaped dunes called dunes of Barchan, carved by the wind; as the lava flowed, he separated himself around them.
When the lava was cooled and hardened, she made it around the dunes. But the Martian winds continued to blow and finally the sand of the dunes dispersed, leaving only lava.

These casts call "ghost dunes" and, although they are known here on Earth, their presence on Mars has only recently been explored. In the Planitia Hellas, there are about 300 of these formations and 480 others have been spotted in a region called Noctis Labyrinthus, filled with a labyrinth of valleys.
