The tick season is underway

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – This is the nymph season, which means that small ticks that look like poppy seeds are now out and can spread Lyme disease.

"In the population of people with Lyme disease, less than 80% of them remember being bitten," said Dr. Ronald Stram.

Finally, small nymphs will become larger adult ticks. Regardless of the size of the tick, they can still carry Lyme disease, a disease that can cause rash, joint pain and cognitive difficulties.

Dr. Ronald Stram stated that not all patients had these symptoms, which meant that there was a high risk of misdiagnosis.

However, for those who are diagnosed, they may be treated with antibiotics.

According to a recent study who looked like a patient with the symptoms of Lyme disease, the treatment of Lyme disease fails for at least 10 to 20% of people.

Dr. Stram said that for these patients, it is likely that they could suffer from co-infections caused by other bacteria that ticks can carry.

"These forms of bacteria might be present, so that a single antibiotic will not be effective if it is dormant and stationary," Stram said. "And again, this subgroup only concerns acute Lyme disease and is based on a rash and positive lab tests."

If you are bitten?

"Record the tick, get it tested," Stram said.

He explained that in this way, you can know in a few days whether you should be treated for a tick-borne disease.

If you do not have the tick, it is best to get tested.
