It's rare that a real event accurately portrayed can look like a horror movie, but that's exactly what HBO offers in the first full trailer of Chernobyl, a new Miniseries for this summer.
The series, from the writer Craig Mazin (Hangover II), will follow the last days of the nuclear site, when an accidental explosion will have devastated Chernobyl and the entire surrounding region of Pripyat, which was then part of the northern Ukrainian SSR. But more importantly than the event itself, the series will also look at the terrible consequences of the event and on the men and women who helped prevent the spread of fission materials further into the future. The trailer gives little detail on the details of Mazin orchestrating the drama of the characters and relies on the striking imagery that the series will use. Before the incident, we show meeting rooms full of people arguing for the safety of the factory, but post-blast scenes that have the biggest impact on the trailer. Debris and burning debris fill the air and we see men in protective gear against hazardous materials trying to clean what they can. We also see what happens to those who are unfortunate enough to be exposed to radiation without combinations of hazardous materials in extremely horrible details.
