ATLANTA – UFC President, Dana White, wishes a stadium show in Australia for the middleweight unifying title between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya after "The Last Stylebender" won the interim gold at UFC 236.
Adesanya (17-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) defeated Kelvin Gastelum (15-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) unanimously Saturday to claim the 185-pound interim belt to the contender's "Combat of the 39, year "UFC 236. The win stages a showdown with Whittaker (20-4 MMA, 11-2 UFC), and White said he knew exactly where he wanted it to happen.
"We were going to do this fight here; I wanted this fight in the United States, "White told reporters, including MMA Junkie, after the fight at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. "We are certainly not fighting this fight in the United States. This fight is taking place in Australia. It will be huge in Australia. I put my guys on it. It's their duty for this week. A stadium, not an arena, a stadium in Australia. "
Whittaker is currently living in Australia and is expected to make one of his cards twice across the country in the last two years. He could not fight at night for either game, but White said he hoped the third time would be the charm in a stadium.
Adesanya, originally from New Zealand after his birth in Nigeria, however, said he had a different idea in mind. He wants the fight on his own turf and said that he will encourage promotion for that to happen. First, however, he must recover from a brutal struggle in which he suffered a great deal of damage.
"It could be in Australia, but Auckland, in my opinion, is also a viable option," said Adesanya. "We can come and go because he was born Kiwi but he is a Maussie. He represents Australia. When will I be ready again? He says August. I say, let me go take my shower first.
"I want to be able to close my mouth properly first, and then we'll see."
Time will tell where the fight will finally take place, but for the moment, White said he was looking forward to the great memorable encounter between Adesanya and Gastelum.
"Gastelum-Adesanya is one of the biggest fights I have ever seen in my life," said White.
