“This fourth wave, the unvaccinated pandemic is actually a very bad reality,” said nurse manager of intensive care Alix Zacharski. “This is the sad truth for us.”

Zacharski told CBS4 that all of the patients here have several things in common – they are younger and none of them are vaccinated.
“Not all are vaccinated,” she said. “Were full. All of the patients who are here now, six of them are under 60 years old.
Dr David De La Zerda is the chief intensive care physician in Jackson. He is concerned about the growing number of patients being treated for COVID.
“Most of our patients are not vaccinated,” said Dr De La Zerda.
As of Friday, there were 171 COVID patients at JMH. It increased by three on Saturday. Sunday was 195. Now it’s over 200.

Of the 205 currently on Jackson’s COVID floor, 185 are unvaccinated. While 20 have been vaccinated, 15 of them are immunocompromised.
“There are many immunocompromised,” he said. “We have a large transplant program here, so most of these patients are kidney transplant recipients, lung transplant recipients, and some patients with obesity and high blood pressure. “
CBS4 was hoping to speak with a patient, but everyone was too sick to speak – many had difficulty breathing.
Yvette Pons, the nurse in charge associated with the COVID floor, told CBS4 that while a few vaccinated patients end up there, those who have been vaccinated generally fare much better than those who are not vaccinated.
“You can get it, but you’re not going to get it really bad. You can come to the hospital, we can treat you and you can go home, rather than coming to the hospital and never coming home, ”Pons said.
She said the solution is simple.
