President Donald Trump has kept his promise to increase US tariffs on Chinese imports – intensifying the trade war between the two largest economies in the world.

Iran denies uttering threat as US increases pressure
Iran's ambassador to the United Nations rejected on Thursday allegations that Tehran has given the go-ahead to its proxies attacking US forces in the Middle East, accusing US officials of using "false intelligence".
Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi told NBC News' Andrea Mitchell that the Trump government's allegations of bellicoseism were false and spread by "the same people" who pushed the United States into Iraq.
Trump said Thursday that his administration had information that Iran was "threatening" the United States, but did not provide any additional details.
Meanwhile, Trump's key intelligence and military advisers have recently held a very unusual meeting Monday morning at 7 am at the CIA headquarters on Iran.
Half a dozen American officials, as well as many alumni, said it was extremely rare for senior White House officials or cabinet members to attend a meeting at CIA headquarters.
US increases tariffs in China and intensifies trade war
After days of threats, tariff increases Trump administration on 200 billion dollars of Chinese imports took effect on Friday.
This decision comes after the failure of trade negotiations with the Chinese.
It exacerbates tensions with Beijing, which is committed to taking "necessary countermeasures" but without giving details of their nature.
Both parties will resume talks today.
A round of golf has sealed the agreement on the appointment of a Secretary of Defense
President should appoint former Boeing executive Patrick Shanahan as secretary of defense – despite his worries that it does not fit the mold of a hardened general in combat, officials said.
A discussion on the golf course with Senator Lindsey Graham convinced Trump that the interim head of the Pentagon was up to the task, NBC News officials told officials.
If confirmed by the Senate, Shanahan would join more than half a dozen other people who ran the department without serving in the military.
