This is the first time we see a black hole image. It was captured using 8 radio telescopes on 5 different continents, which together form a virtual telescope of the size of the Earth, called the Horizon Telescope Event Project. The image was released on April 10, 2019.

This is the first time that scientists have direct visual evidence of a black hole and its shadow. The circle in the middle shows the shadow of the black hole.

The ring of light around the shadow is a collection of chaotic photons that have not been sucked into the black hole. It is this ring of light that the EHT project has observed.

The black hole is 55 million light-years from Earth and 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun. It rests in the center of Messier 87, a galaxy of the group of galaxies of the Virgin.
