TAMPA – Giancarlo Stanton's first season in the Bronx ended with a whistle at Yankee Stadium during the loss to the Red Sox in the fourth game of the season in ALDS.
As he begins his second spring training with the Yankees, Stanton said the sad end of the season until 2018 and the treatment reserved by his fans did not bother him.
"You do not worry about this stuff," Stanton said Monday at a press conference at George M. Steinbrenner Field. "I know how well I work and what I'm trying to do, so it's not a factor."
And he shared the confidence expressed by Aaron Boone that his experience in the spotlight after his unfortunate arrival Marlins will help him in 2019.
"I have a year in the division and the league under my belt, so things will be more comfortable in this aspect, facing some of these guys and teams more often," said Stanton.
Boone think that Stanton, which has yet finished 2018 with 38 homers, 100 RBIs and a PSO of 0.82, will benefit even more experience than other players.
"One thing with Giancarlo that we noticed while digging things up is that the more he sees a thrower, it's one of the guys he's really enjoying," the manager said. "He's starting to see guys, more than a normal person, when he gets a big spike.
Something other than Stanton thinks he has for him now that he has not done it for much of last year is a healthy left hamstring.
"It was not the best for me," said Stanton of the injury that surfaced early August and persisted for most of the season. "But I was not worried about that. If I could go out and produce or help to win, I would be there. But that was quite a factor. "
He played a role in a 29-game streak during which Stanton scored just three goals and earned a 0.537 SPO in 130 appearances on the plate.
But with Aaron Judge absent for seven weeks with a broken right wrist fracture from July to September, Stanton chose to stay in training.
"One of the things we liked about him last year was his ability to publish when he was not perfect and his commitment to doing it knowing we were a little bit beaten," said Boone.
"I thought he was doing a very good job, even when he was taking care of [the injury] and on certain days it bothered him the most to see him govern himself, "said the director. "I thought that he still had good basics, that he was perfectly in control of the situation and that he was in better health by the end of the year."
Stanton missed a total of seven games in the past two seasons and said he would be ready to play the field again if needed.
And he would not say if he intended to stick to the closed position he went through during the 2017 season.
"I know how I feel and what's good," said Stanton. "You can hit the coaches whatever you want."
Whatever his position, Stanton hopes to use it in the playoffs after a difficult start to the playoffs, which was part of the adjustment he had after eight seasons in Miami.
"It's more accurate to play games that matter," Stanton said of the difference between playing with the Marlins and the Yankees. "When you're in the game after May 7 – which I've never done – every game, a win or a loss is huge for the season. It's different. It's different when you lose three games in a row, it does not really matter, you lose three in a row and someone will disappear. … I guess that was the biggest challenge.
