The Yankees gather late, tied with the Orioles 2-2

The Yankees played their first game of spring Friday, but the exhibition against the Orioles was not televised. It's a shame because it was a fun rally in the ninth inning. James Paxton started and started well, but allowed a home run to mark the start of the third inning. That put the bombers behind, and they had to wait until the bottom of the ninth to answer. The Yankees and Orioles tied for 2-2.

1. The Yankees strengthened the Bullpen of Doom ™ by signing Zack Britton and Adam Ottavino. They add to a final stage scenario that also includes Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances. Do not forget Chad Green. The right-hander faced four batters on Friday night and took out three. Bryan Hoch reports that Green has launched 15 fields – 13 registered as strikes. Realistically, Green could be part of several teams. The Yankees are spoiled for choice in relief.

2. Gary Sanchez made his Grapefruit League debut, scoring 0-0. Sanchez hit in his first game, then hit a ball in the middle of the field in his second game. Of course, a dive in the center of the field has deprived him of a shot. Bad luck. The good news here, however, is that Sanchez is healthy and playing.

3. DJ LeMahieu took the start in third base and, while he had spent a sober night in front of the set, he played leather.

I questioned the logic behind the appointment of a second-career player to play a utilitarian but perhaps rather athletic role of LeMahieu to handle the job. I'll need to see more of a good game – damn it, I did not even see this one – but it's still encouraging.

Strong point of the game

This is where you can imagine Clint Frazier, Matt Lipka and Rashad Crawford teaming up for the ninth inning. The televised baseball can not arrive soon enough.
