The Yankees should activate Didi Gregorius tomorrow

7:39 p.m.: The Yankees should restore short stopovers Didi Gregorius Bryan Hoch of MLB.com writes on the list of injured tomorrow. He spent the whole season there as he was recovering from Tommy John's surgery last October. Activation will require an alignment of 40 and 25 men, as he is currently on the 60-day casualty list.

Gregorius was well ahead of his rehab program. The team's initial projections simply stated that the Yankees were hoping for a "summer" comeback, but it is obviously very early in the lineup. Gregorius has already recorded eight service games in a minor league re-education mission. If he beat only 0.156 / 0.206 / 0.250 34 times on a pair of minor league levels, the Yankees clearly saw enough of his ability to come back.

The return of Gregorius will add a high-level player to what has been a bit of a patchy indoor field. The Yankees season addition to DJ LeMahieu turned out to be a boon because it helped cover not only Gregorius' absences, but Miguel Andujar and Troy Tulowitzki. With Gregorius back in the fold, he will see an almost regular action at short stop, with Gleyber Torres to share the time with the two zones of influence and LeMahieu slipping perhaps on the third base. This will probably mean a reduction in playing time for the red player Gio Urshela, which unexpectedly burst with a .325 / .371 / .455 slash across 170 plate appearances (coming into play today).

If a member of the composition of the field appears particularly threatened, it would seem that Kendrys Morales, which has not touched much since its acquisition by the Yankees. As the most productive Luke Voit, Morales is limited to first base when playing in defense, which limits the flexibility of coach Aaron Boone. If Morales is pushed out by the return of Gregorius, it would open the way to new attacks for the mix of Voit, Gregorius, Mahieu, Torres and Urshela. Alternatively, the Yankees could option Thairo Estrada back to Triple-A, keep Morales for the moment and move Tulowitzki or Giancarlo Stanton from the 10-day casualty list to the 60-day casualty list. Both have already been on the IL for more than 60 days anyway.
