Sonoma County has reached a promising milestone in the pandemic: The number of Sonoma County residents who have completed their vaccinations now exceeds the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases.
About 32,777 people have received both doses of Moderna or Pfizer vaccines in Sonoma County as of February 25, according to county data. There have been 27,925 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the county since March 2020, when a resident returning from a cruise in Mexico became the first person locally to test positive for the virus.

“It’s a big step that we now have more people fully vaccinated than the total number of confirmed cases,” said Matt Brown, communications specialist for Sonoma County, in an email. “This means that we are actively delivering the vaccine to guns and protecting vulnerable people from the virus. As more people are vaccinated, we hope to start to see less transmission of COVID, which will help reduce our case rate.
There were 67,227 residents who received their first dose of vaccine and 100,000 people received a vaccine as of February 25, the data showed.
“This represents almost 25 percent of our adult population aged 16 and over (411,000),” Brown wrote. “We will continue to vaccinate as many people as possible, as long as the supply is there.”
About 494,336 people live in Sonoma County, according to estimates from the US Census Bureau. To achieve herd immunity, 60 to 80 percent of the population must be vaccinated, said Dr Sundari Mase, the county’s public health official, in a community briefing on Feb. 18.
