The month-long spate of COVID cases in the United States shows no signs of slowing down. Sadly, all states but one have seen infections on the rise over the past week, with hospitalizations and deaths following. But the nationwide spike in COVID cases is being felt particularly in some states where outbreaks have increased dramatically in recent days.
According to The New York Times, the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant took the national daily average to its highest levels since early February, jumping 118% in the past two weeks to 124,470 cases as of August 9. Some experts have pointed out that such a spike — which largely affects those who are not vaccinated — could be a harbinger of what is to come in the fight against the virus.
“I think we’re closer to the start than the end [of the pandemic], and it’s not because the variant we’re looking at right now is going to last that long, ” Larry Brilliant, MD, an epidemiologist who was part of the World Health Organization (WHO) team that helped eradicate smallpox and founder of a pandemic consulting firm, told CNBC during an interview on August 6. “Unless we vaccinate everyone in over 200 countries there will always be new variants,” he said, while adding that he believed COVID would evolve into an “eternal virus” similar to influenza.
Other experts, such as Scott Gottlieb, MD, a former Food & Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner, pointed out that some behaviors have not been escalated enough to stop the spread of the Delta variant, especially as schools are set to reopen in many parts of the United States. the use of better quality masks such as KN95 instead of largely ineffective cloth masks, citing that people vaccinated for the most part asymptomatic can transmit the virus to others for a short period of time.
“We are adopting a sort of Alpha state of mind in a Delta world, and that won’t work,” Gottlieb said during an Aug. 9 appearance on CNBC, referring to the strain previously dominant in the United States. We’ll see that the Delta variant is more difficult to control. “
