Most people were first introduced to the idea of ​​wearing face masks when the pandemic began, but doctors and healthcare professionals have been doing so for their entire working lives. At work, 13 healthcare professionals from different fields tell Yahoo Life they wear an N95 or surgical mask. Outside of work, some say they will continue to wear N95 masks. But, since the CDC always recommends that they be reserved for healthcare workers, we focused only on the disposable and fabric options they seek. Here’s what doctors use for face masks when they can’t see patients.

The majority of healthcare professionals say they enjoy wearing a surgical-type mask outside of work. “I’m just wearing a regular disposable surgical mask,” infectious disease specialist Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Yahoo Life. Dr. Timothy Murphy, senior associate dean for clinical and translational research at the University of Buffalo, tells Yahoo Life he’s doubling down on surgical masks. “When I go out I have made a habit of wearing two surgical masks – one tied for a snug fit, to take advantage of both the extra layers and the tight fit to maximize protection for myself and of others, ”he said. And Dr Gloria A Bachmann, medical director of the PROUD Gender Center of New Jersey at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, tells Yahoo Life that she is opting for a “standard disposable mask” without “any signature or message” for a right. “I want to send the universal message that we are all in the same boat – that wearing a mask while working, running errands, walking in my neighborhood, etc., is the only thing we can all do as a team,” says -she. .

For everyday use outside of the clinic and hospital, Dr. Angela Caswell-Monack, an obstetrician / gynecologist at Women’s Wellness of Southern Delaware, is looking for these popular Old Navy masks. Several doctors say they followed the CDC’s new double-masking recommendations. Dr Richard Watkins, an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, tells Yahoo Life he will overlay a surgical or cloth mask over a medical procedure mask for added protection. “I don’t want to take any chances,” he said. Women’s health expert Dr. Jennifer Wider told Yahoo Life that she is also passionate about double masking, especially at the grocery store: “Surgical mask underneath and cloth above.” Wider says Umma’s sheet masks are his favorite – they have multiple layers and a “snug” nose thread.

Dr Jessica Shepherd, an obstetrician / gynecologist in Texas, is a big fan of these masks. “It has a soft fabric that’s treated with Silvadur antimicrobial preservative technology,” she told Yahoo Life. Dr William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist and professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Life that he alternates between wearing a surgical mask and a multi-layered black cloth mask when he is wearing himself. take a walk.
