News regarding the coronavirus vaccine continues to mount, with the end of the week bringing a number of new developments – including the Trump administration misleading the country on the size of the US vaccine stockpile to President-elect Biden revealing more details on its comprehensive national COVID vaccine strategy. The latter, among other things, will involve pushing states to drop complex levels and making more vaccination sites and federal resources available so that the pace of vaccination is dramatically accelerated. As for the former, it appears the Trump administration has either lied or messed up (or a combination of the two) when it comes to America’s vaccine supply.
Trump administration Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced on Tuesday that the administration would “release the entire supply (of vaccines) for ordering by states, rather than keeping the second doses reserved”. Except, oops – according to what a senior administration official said CNN, what reserve we had has already been exhausted. At least, the vaccine news isn’t all bad – just look at the new trial data released earlier this week in the New England Journal of Medicine regarding the safety, efficacy and potential side effects of the new single dose vaccine against the coronavirus from Johnson & Johnson.

According to the results of the trial, researchers at Johnson & Johnson had randomly assigned just over 800 participants to get a high or low dose of the vaccine, or a placebo. The results show that after 29 days after vaccination, at least 90% of study participants had developed neutralizing antibodies – a figure that rose to 100% 57 days after vaccination.
Some of the side effects of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine, soon to be licensed in the United States, include:

- Headache / muscle pain
- Tired
- Pain at the injection site
And that’s it, so far. Pain at the vaccine injection site appeared to be the most common side effect among participants in the J&J study. Hopefully this good news will help pave the way for a swift decision on whether to authorize Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine for use in the United States, where part of the bottleneck has been a self-imposed limitation of l supply of vaccines. “Self-imposed,” in the sense that the Trump administration’s mistakes included not purchasing enough Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine to make a major dent in the United States so far, among others.
