DENVER – Public health officials on Tuesday announced that another Colorado child had died from influenza, making it the third-most flu-related child death in Colorado in the United States. season 2018-2019.
The school-aged child was from the Denver Metropolitan Area and died during the week ending March 16, according to a report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment. .
The report indicates that the third case was associated with influenza A, H3N2. The two previous pediatric cases in Colorado were associated with influenza A, H1N1 – the predominant strain of this season.
The first flu-related infant death this season in Colorado took place the week ending January 12th. The second child, Selina Nguyen, 7 years old,
died February 7 after more than a month of hospitalization
in a comatose state.
Children under age four experienced the second highest rate of influenza-related hospitalizations this season, with about 113 hospitalizations per 100,000 people. People aged 65 and over have the highest rate of hospitalizations at 168.2 per 100,000 people.
Colorado pneumonia and influenza mortality for the week ending March 9th was 5.8%. This is below the national level of 7.1%.
Since the end of September, 3,300 people have been hospitalized with influenza in Colorado, and the state has had 68 influenza-associated outbreaks this season.
It is not known if all three fatal cases have been vaccinated. But the Center for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot as the first step in influenza prevention.
