With the NFL free agency in a few days, the team’s distribution of needs for the 2021 NFL Draft will change dramatically with each signing. So take simulated blanks right now with a grain of salt.
Take NBC Sports Chicago’s latest Adam Hoge simulation project. He’s got the Bears in a total assault on offense with their first four caps.
In the first round, Hoge took the Bears against Virginia Tech offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw. He’s a great choice, especially in light of the team’s decision to part ways with Bobby Massie. Darrisaw is an absolute stud and one of the top 10 players on my board. It would be of great value if it drops to No.20.
In the second inning – at No. 52 – he landed Minnesota Bears WR Rashod Bateman.
Look, if Chicago comes out of the first two rounds with Darrisaw and Bateman? Consider this a dream come true. But that will not happen. Bateman is a first-round player and there’s little to no chance he’s ranked 52nd.
I love the focused position, but the choice is wishful thinking.
Hoge remains offensive in the third inning and the Bears land Ohio State’s Trey Sermon, a handsome prospect who has all the traits teams look for in a starting running back.
Chicago has no depth behind David Montgomery (even with a healthy Tarik Cohen returning) and Sermon, another banger between tackles, would make a lot of sense.
The Bears’ first quarterback pick in this simulation comes in the fifth round, with Georgia’s Jamie Newman (last played for Wake Forest). More an athlete than a pure passer, Newman has the advantage of an NFL replacement who, at this point in his career, is projecting himself as a guy on the practice squad. Not a good choice.
