This is what Android 12’s chat widgets will look like

Ahead of the arrival of the Android 12 developer first preview, some leaked mockups suggest we’re in for a pretty big overhaul with a wallpaper-based theme, a new notification shade, and chat widgets. Most of these features were already spotted hidden away in the Developer’s First Look, and now we have our first look at Chat Widgets thanks to XDA as well.

The changes were spotted by XDA Forums member and Android app developer Kieron Quinn, who successfully reverse engineered the widget. The widget is called “People Space” while it’s under development, and Quinn was able to confirm that it is currently pulling the latest chat partners from the Google Messages app, but at the moment it doesn’t show not the conversation itself. It also doesn’t work with third-party apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

The mockups we saw before the Android 12 developer first preview give us a better look at what’s possible with conversation widgets. You can litter your home screen with widgets and monitor multiple conversations and activities at once, including Facebook Messenger chats, missed calls, and calendar events. Support for third-party apps was also highlighted in internal documents collected by XDA, and Google is currently planning to make the chat widget a mandatory part of Android 12 for all manufacturers, so you won’t have to. maybe you don’t even need a Pixel phone to enjoy it.
