According to federal prosecutors, the wife of infamous convicted drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested Monday for her alleged role in an international drug trafficking system.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, a citizen of Mexico and the United States, was arrested at Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, DC, the Department of Justice said in a press release. Coronel Aispuro, 31, has been charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana in the United States, the DOJ said.

She also allegedly conspired with others to aid El Chapo in his escape from a Mexican prison in July 2015. During this escape, Guzman freed himself by showering in his cell in a lighted tunnel of a thousand meters. with a motorcycle on rails.

Court documents accuse Coronel Aispuro of working with Guzman’s sons and a witness, who is now cooperating with the US government, to organize the construction of the underground tunnel that Guzman used to escape the Altiplano prison in order to l ‘prevent being extradited to the United States. The plot included the purchase of land near the prison, guns and an armored truck and smuggling a GPS watch so that they could “pinpoint exactly where it is in order to build the tunnel with a entry point accessible to him, ”the court documents indicate.

After her husband’s arrest the following year, Coronel Aispuro was “engaged in planning a new prison break” before Guzman was extradited to the United States in 2017. After Guzman was arrested again after his escape, Coronel Aispuro lobbied the Mexican government to improve the husband’s detention conditions.

Coronel Aispuro is scheduled to appear in federal court in Washington DC on Tuesday. She remained in detention and it was not immediately clear whether she had a lawyer who could comment on the allegations.

The former teenage beauty queen regularly attended Guzman’s trial, even when testimonies cast her in a cruel light. The two, separated by the age of over 30, have been together for at least 2007 and share twin daughters, born in 2011.

Her father, Ines Coronel Barreras, was arrested in 2013 along with one of her sons and several other men in a warehouse with hundreds of pounds of marijuana across the border from Douglas, Arizona. Months earlier, the US Treasury announced financial sanctions against Coronel Barreras for his alleged drug trafficking.

Guzman was tried in the Eastern District of New York in 2019 and sentenced to life behind bars in a massive drug conspiracy that has spread murder and chaos for more than two decades. After being convicted in 2019, Coronel Aispuro decided to launch a clothing line in his name.

He was known to be the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, responsible for smuggling mountains of cocaine and other drugs into the United States during his 25-year reign, prosecutors said in recent court documents. They also said his “army of sicarios” or “contract killers” had been ordered to kidnap, torture and kill anyone who stood in their way.
