Assuming that Samsung continues to use the S Series handsets early next year, it is likely that we will have a trio of variants of the Galaxy S11 at the top of Plus size, and perhaps even to marvel at the fans of the brand with a new innovative design. We say "assuming" that Samsung is moving ahead with an S11 early in 2020, because, as we noted on Monday, a rumor has begun to circulate (attributable to the famous fugitive Evan Blass) that Samsung will merge its Combined brands S and Note, producing some new possibly instead of an S11 next year.
At the same time, Samsung's design teams are still working behind the scenes and have just patented a sleek slider design that could very well be part of the S11, if Samsung ended up doing so.
At the end of August, a patent filed by Samsung earlier this year with the US Patent and Trademark Office (US Patent and Trademark Office) depicts a smartphone with a retractable screen. The patent, spotted by the Dutch technology news blog LetsGoDigital, shows a compact sliding device that slips easily into a folded pocket and includes a rounded screen with cascading display. As stated in the patent documentation, you pull up to enlarge the screen. Completely expanded, there is approximately 25% more display space.
Other design details as envisioned in the patent:
You must unplug the phone completely to use the rear cameras. It also means that, in its most compact orientation, the rear cameras stay hidden and protected from scratches and debris. It seems that there is also room in the upper part of the screen for the speaker and the front camera.
You could almost look at a design like this and think that's an example of Samsung protecting its bets by trying to offer consumers something new on the same model as the Galaxy Fold – with its new way to introduce extra space to the screen – without creating the same bold jump as the fold. This does not concern all consumers. This design, however, seems a lot more traditional and affordable, bringing a touch of nice but unambiguous design to the Galaxy S11 – again, assuming that Samsung decides to create and publish such a model. Rumors about its merger with the brand Note are for the moment only rumors.
