Mayor Sylvester Turner has hinted that a curfew may be in Houston’s future as coronavirus cases increase.
Matt Dougherty of KHOU 11 reports that after a video of spectators without masks wrapped in a downtown club went viral, Turner mentioned an extreme measure the city could take to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The video showed a crowded dance floor at Spire Night Club during a Lil Baby concert on November 25. Few people wear masks.
“The last resource we have as local officials, at least in my arsenal, is to impose a curfew just to shut it down at a certain point,” Turner said.
Bars operating as restaurants are allowed to operate at 75% capacity under the current order of Governor Greg Abbott. A city-wide curfew would only close bars and restaurants at a certain time.
Turner also said he would conduct visits to facilities in Houston that may violate Abbott’s order, KHOU 11 reports.
Harris County has reported 3,646 new cases of COVID-19 since November 27. Texas has a positive test rate of 11.33%.
Houston wouldn’t be the first major city in Texas to implement a curfew. San Antonio officials have imposed a 22-hour curfew over Thanksgiving weekend to discourage large gatherings, MySA’s Taylor Pettaway reported. Violations were punishable by fines of up to $ 1,000.
