Women’s health
My name is Kimberly Vargas (@ kimmmie.k) and I am 23 years old. I live in New Mexico and I work as an office manager for my father’s transport company. By following the keto diet, working out at least five times a week, and getting a personal trainer, I lost around 70 pounds.
I have been a “bigger” girl for most of my life and it has been a struggle for as well as I can remember. I have tried to lose weight several times in the past but always found myself putting it back on.
Finding clothes (especially jeans) that fit and match my style was the hardest part of being at my previous weight. Another struggle for me has been being terrified of going to amusement parks or water parks because of my weight. My relationship with weight loss in the past has been an emotional roller coaster.
My turning point came when I stepped on the scale and read 302 books.
I always told myself that I would never weigh more than 300 pounds, until I did in February 2020. I thought, This can’t be true, let me try, and to my disappointment, the scale was correct.
I felt I had hit rock bottom. That day, I decided to make a change. I would become healthier, happier and stronger. I wanted my family, my husband and especially my late grandmother to be proud. I wanted to change for myself, too, and I started my journey.
I started my fitness journey by making workout videos at home, then joining a gym and finding a personal trainer.
For exercise, I started by making home fat burning workout videos for beginners called Daniel Bartlett’s Body project. After two months of exercising at home and changing my eating habits, I was seeing results! The workouts started to get easier for me and I knew I was capable of a lot more.
At my height, I knew I was being judged silently all the time (and not so silently sometimes too), so the thought of going to the gym intimidated me. But I finally found the courage to say, “Go on!” And I joined a gym three months after starting my trip.
I started to feel more comfortable in the gym and felt good knowing that I was finally taking a step forward and doing something positive for myself.
I saw a personal trainer, who I still train with, called Israel Martinez, owner of IM Fitness Gym. I was relieved to know that I finally had a fitness expert to walk me through the workouts. I had someone to push me and help me stay motivated.
Now I train five times a week, sometimes twice a day. I make sure to run, walk or jog at least three miles a day. My gym days consist of various workouts planned by my trainer. I train upper body, lower body and do various cardio and weight lifting exercises.
Much of my weight loss success has also come from the keto diet.
The first nutrition change I made was to increase my water intake. I drink plenty of water throughout the day, and just when I think I have enough, I drink more. My goal is to drink at least 100 ounces of water per day.
Then I started cutting back on carbs, starch, and sugar – and realized how similar it was to the keto diet. I did more research on keto and decided to give it a go. Having said that, I knew I had to be patient and not get discouraged after not seeing results right away.
After doing the diet for about three weeks, I started to notice small changes. I started to see improvement in my skin, my digestion and my energy level. I have tried all the different ways to lose weight when it comes to diet. But when I started keto, my late night snacks and my sugar and junk food cravings all went out the window. It worked!
I no longer crave sugar or carbohydrates. It’s a lifestyle change that transforms how I feel. I no longer suffer from lack of energy throughout my day. I feel my mind is sharper and my memory is improving. I am also finally satisfied with my meals.
Here’s what I typically eat in a day now.
-
Lunch: Two eggs garnished with avocado, bacon and a chaffle (cheese waffle). Other days I will make tuna salad boats or lettuce wraps with buffalo shrimp.
-
Having dinner: Chicken wings (bone-in, of course) are my favorite. I usually choose a protein and add some veggies like broccoli, asparagus, squash, zucchini, or cauliflower rice on the side.
-
Snacks: Almonds, string cheese, pork rind, beef jerky and, if I fancy something sweet, two good bombs of yogurt, berries or strawberries.
After losing 70 pounds, I feel better than ever, both mentally and physically.
Losing 70 pounds is a big achievement for me. Even simple tasks like tying my shoes just got easier. Mentally, I feel more confident, more relaxed, and more receptive to life.
Losing weight wasn’t essential, but it was something that I really wanted for myself. I know I’m doing something right when I notice things getting easier for me physically and mentally, like not needing a belt extender in flight anymore or seeing that a medium sized towel finally fits. to my body. It’s such an amazing feeling.
Now, I love to create content that inspires others to live their best lives.
I’m finally in control and I won’t let anything hold me back or stop me from becoming the best version of myself. I have used my platforms on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to help others live their best lives with the beauty, lifestyle and cooking content I create.
My goal is to spread positivity and good energy. I hope to inspire and encourage others to prove that it is possible to lose weight and be healthier. It is not easy, but it is not impossible.
