On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin publicly declared climate change “a matter of national security,” saying the Pentagon would begin to consider the issue in its decision-making.

Austin issued a written statement following a White House press conference with new Presidential Special Climate Envoy John Kerry and National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy, as well as President Joe Biden signing an executive order on climate change.

Speaking to the media from the State Dining Room, Biden announced that McCarthy would also head the White House’s domestic climate policy office, which is newly created by his executive order.

“As head of the new office and my national climate advisor, Gina will chair a national climate working group, made up of many members of our cabinet, to propose a whole-of-government approach to the climate crisis,” noted Biden.
