The Wall Street Journal evacuated its last workers out of Kabul on Saturday after a week of repeated attempts including attacks on some of them and help from the Qatari government.
The Journal’s successful evacuation concluded an effort by The Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post to remove more than 200 people from the country over the past week. On Friday morning, the Journal said it facilitated the safe passage of its Afghan colleagues and their families, evacuating 76 people to Qatar; the last four remained at Kabul airport awaiting a promised flight for three days.
The four were in the air en route to Ukraine on Saturday, according to Journal editor Karen Pensiero.
The New York Times and the Washington Post said earlier this week that the two news outlets had successfully evacuated their colleagues and families from Afghanistan.
The Biden administration said earlier this week that Kabul International Airport was open to military and commercial flights, but thousands of people trying to leave Afghanistan still struggle to get to the capital’s airport. . By Friday, the perimeter of Kabul airport remained engulfed in chaos, with troops firing tear gas to control the desperate crowds.
