A nod to journalism
THUMBS UP: The Nobel committee made an unusual selection for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. Instead of choosing a political leader, a national statesman or a diplomat, he chose two journalists, Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov from Russia. These two practice independent journalism in two countries where journalists face repression, arrests, attacks and even murder for telling the truth about the leaders of their countries. Ressa, founder of the Rappler news site, was convicted last year of defamation and sentenced to prison for reporting the truth about the murderous President of the Philippines Rodrig Duterte. Muratov, one of the founders of the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, saw reporters on its murdered staff and its workers designated as “Foreign agents” by the Putin administration.
Ressa and Muratov were considered “Representatives of all the journalists who defend this ideal in a world where democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly unfavorable conditions”, said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
This is a tremendous recognition of the important work journalists around the world do to protect themselves against abuse of power and government lies.
The CTE center looks promising
THUMBS UP: District 88 will present its new CTE (vocational technical training) center on October 20. A glimpse of the center, the old Windings building, looks very promising.
CTE programs aim to introduce high school students to possible careers in the building trades and skilled labor. There is a high demand for this type of worker and for many students it offers a great career opportunity.
We have no doubt that the District 88 CTE center will be one of the best in the state when it opens.
Oktoberfest triumphs
THUMBS UP: It was touch and go for a while on Friday night at the Best Western Plus Hotel, where Oktoberfest celebrants awaited the traditional tap of the party keg.
Mayor Terry Sveine had the sad duty to inform them that the barrel was out of service and could not be tapped. The celebrants waited anxiously for an hour before the keg was repaired and the beer poured.
We’re sure the taps will flow much more reliably today at Best Western and Schell’s Brewery. So Happy Oktoberfest everyone, and please celebrate responsibly.
