A woman from Alabama showed no emotion when she was sentenced to death by lethal injection for starving her 10-year-old daughter-in-law.

Tiffany Moss, 36, was sentenced to death on Tuesday by a jury of Gwinett County, following the death of Emani Moss in 2013, whose malnourished body was burned in a garbage can.

She was convicted on Monday of all counts including murder, after being represented herself.

Throughout the proceedings, Moss remained silent as prosecutors described how she had starved and locked Emani in a bedroom in their Lawrenceville apartment.

Prosecutors alleged that the girl was living in bed with garbage because she was too malnourished to move and weighed 32 pounds when she died.

After the death of the girl, the mother-in-law and her husband threw the body in a garbage can and set it on fire, officials said.

Moss did not make any opening or closing statements at the trial and refused to call witnesses at the bar.

The jury of six men and six women decided Tuesday morning to sentence Moss to the death penalty, rather than life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The girl's father, Eman Moss, is serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole.
